Livestock Information

Develop a world-leading livestock traceability system that will boost trade, improve resilience, and drive innovation

ROLE:
Design Director

I worked as Design Director within an agile, cross-functional team to create a cloud-based livestock traceability system for the UK government. The platform supports the livestock industry by offering essential services such as movement reporting, animal health data, and supply chain information—spanning cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry. It also serves as a future-ready foundation for third-party vendors to build on.

Approach

The project employed an Agile Design Process, beginning with a detailed backlog inspection to pinpoint key tasks. Journey maps were created to visualise the user experience, and in-person sketching workshops were held to foster collaboration. The design team sketched UI flows and essential screens, aligning them with component templates. Client presentations gathered feedback for iterative prototyping and real user testing. After several iterations, final screens and components were refined, documented, and integrated into the backlog. Designers actively engaged in developer grooming sessions to ensure alignment between design and development.

Design vocabulary

UK Government Design System
In order to maintain GDS compliance, we have integrated type scales, page grids, CTAs, spacing guides, and components into our designs.

LI Brand Guidelines
Our designs should accurately reflect the proposed creative concept and effectively bring the LI brand guidelines to life.

Accessibility
In addition to delivering UI flows the team has prepared documentation includes guidelines for Voice Over and Tabbing. This means that anyone can access the site via the keyboard and or a screenreader

Impact

The platform is tailored for multi-species use, offering a rules-based approach adaptable for comprehensive animal data reporting across all breeds and species. We’ve ensured consistency through digitised paper movements and streamlined user journeys, underpinned by language and design pattern uniformity. Our solution undergoes rigorous testing and validation with real users to ensure tasks are simplified and problems effectively addressed.
